Blue is a wardrobe staple for me but not all blues are equal.  Two of the most popular shades are navy blue and royal blue which can make very different style statements.  Did you know, your skin tone plays a major role in determining which one suits you.

In this post, we will break down:

The differences between navy and royal blue

How to find your undertone

Which shade works best for your skin

Styling tips for both tones

1. Know Your Skin's Tone

Before choosing your blue, you need to know your skin’s undertone which is different to your skin colour (fair, medium, dark).

How to Tell:

Cool Undertones:  Your skin has pink, red or bluish hues.  Veins appear blue or purple

Warm Undertones: Your skin has yellow, golden or peachy hues.  Veins appear green.

Neutral Undertones:  A mix of both – veins may look blue-green and most colours look good on you.

2. Navy Blue: The Ultimate Classic

Personally I love blue.  Navy is versatile and is often used in business wear.  Almost everyone can wear it and is a safer alternative to black which sometimes can feel a little harsh.  It is ideal for low-contrast complexions (light hair, fair skin).

Style Ideas:

  • A navy blazer with white or beige trousers and nude heels
  • A navy sweater over a shirt for a preppy look
  • Accessorise with camel, burgundy or gold for warmth

3. Royal Blue: The Show Stopper

Best For:  Cool and Neutral Undertones

Royal Blue is vivid and energising and adds a jolt of colour to any look and is perfect for making a statement.

Why it works:

  • Great for cool-toned skin – brings out the pinks and blues
  • Looks stunning on medium to deep skin tones
  • Perfect for weddings, parties or adding a splash of colour to a neutral outfit.
Style Ideas:
A royal blue dress complimented with silver jewellery
Cobalt blue shoes to a neutral outfit.

A Quick Mirror Test

Not sure which blue is best for you – here’s a fast trick.

Hold a navy or royal blue garment up to your face in a natural light.  See which one makes your eyes pop, brightens your skin tone and does not dull your complexion.

Final Thoughts: Choose the Blue Based on Mood & Message

Navy:  For when you feel grounded, professional or elegant

Royal Blue:  When you feel confident, energetic or vibrant.
